Eastern Delights

Eastern sweets, made not bought in

This is the section that makes Layali a Levantine cafe rather than a dessert bar. Warbat at $11.99 for three — layered pastry with pistachio, walnut or cream. Lady Fingers at $4.99 for three. Lady Bracelet at $6.99. Halwet Jibn at $8.99, the sweet cheese roll that most people have only had in Beirut or Damascus.

If you grew up with these you will know immediately whether a place makes them properly. If you did not, order the warbat with pistachio and a Turkish coffee, and start there.

Questions

Do you have baklava?

The warbat and lady fingers are the same family — layered pastry, nuts, syrup. Ask at the counter for what is on the tray today.

What is halwet jibn?

A sweet cheese roll from the Levant, soft and mild, usually eaten with syrup and pistachio. It is the one to try if you want something you cannot get elsewhere nearby.

Can I buy a whole tray?

Yes — trays for gatherings go through the catering form or by phone.
